Have you tried our new Apple Streusel cupcake yet? The apple spice cake is baked with tasty apples, then filled with apple pie filling, swirled with vanilla buttercream, and topped with more apple pie filling and streusel. So where do all these apples come from?

Team cupcake didn’t have to go far for locally sourced apples for our Apple Streusel cupcake. In fact, we didn’t even leave the city. We’ve partnered with City Fruit to harvest apples grown right in the neighborhoods around us!

City Fruit is a great organization powered by a team of wonderful individuals who care about preserving and sharing the bounty in our own yards. They help tree owners grow healthy fruit, provide assistance in harvesting and preserving fruit, promote the sharing of extra fruit, and work to protect urban fruit trees.

Our team joined them in visiting three yards with ripe fruit ready for harvest. The apple tree was small, but loaded with crisp juicy sweet apples. Perfect for eating (we should know), and perfect for using in the Apple Streusel cupcakes!

While we are only using the apples in our cupcakes, we also helped them harvest pears and plums as well. It was so fun! The fruit that is harvested goes in multiple directions: some is left for the homeowner (if they desire), some goes to CSA boxes, some goes to places like Cupcake Royale to be transformed into awesome cupcakes. But the majority of the bounty goes to local food banks to serve families and children who are food insecure (meaning that they do not know where their next meal will come from). We love supporting this incredible organization!
